Google Teaching

Its been a while since I posted and it seems I've been knee deep in google! Yes, ok I use it for my email and docs, recently maps (been improving the functionality of the creative maps, awesome btw, post to come) and Youtuube. So without further-a-do... is that how you type that expression?... anyway!

Google is also integrated into my teaching through sharing resources digitally on google docs, to them submitting visual research through blogger. Today a colleague suspected you could use a google (word) doc as a live wiki, I was intirgued and we got the students to input their email address (hence not great quality to read) but we'd not seen how it works.

As you can see from the video you can see how it flickers as with different colour tags which are the different students collaborating on a timeline of research into how we have got to our digital world of today... when zuckerberg invented facebook to when logie baird invented the tele (ok majority are now plasma's as opposed to cathode ray tube).

But to watch it live (the colleges servers and ageing laptops just about survived created a beautiful collaborative document and such a fast, vast resource (ok didint ask to double checkl their sources of data, much in the same respect as a wiki) of info that created such debate that the tutuor could just reflect on to point out the shortening of technological development cycles (there is a better description for it) and key dates etc.

Infographics

Is there a way to track the amount of individual user input into the document other than colour coding each users text? I can imagine a tree diagram to represent the contrasting majorities of users input. I mean its useful in that you can track which user is doing what and who is adding the most useful data, but can we data mine their input?

Anyhow, I can imagine this technique has been done much already and we're hardly new, but I had to record it as it looked so good their collaboration and I'd love anyfeedback as if it is possible to translate this input technique into stats that can be made into infographics (not for the 'eye candy' novelty, though intriguing to innovate, but to assess, evaluate the students learning. Give Curriculum Leaders/Verifiers a clean-sweep-perception to aid the arbitary quantification of un-easy quantifiable currency of creative understanding. Ok, maybe not as deep as the whole of creativity, but still.

Universal Translator

SN204909 lres Universal Translator

Can you picture it! Well google are probably well on their way developing it, but I want to share more doodles and ideas on this blog more.

Won't it be brilliant to use this as an app on your phone, or automatically detect a langauge from a sender then automatically translate it to the language you understand in their reciever. It cant be far away from development.

There is voice to text search app from google on my android htc, i'm sure there is text to voice that I hear students playing with on the mac with it. I can appreciate it probably takes a lot of servers to manage with the global population wanting to converse and communicate in their own lanaguage to other businessmen.

If you take the shannon and weaver communication model diagram of 1949 was... the noise in the middle would be the server translating and detecting idioms (uk an example would be: dog and bone, or up north: put wood in 'oil) and dialects.

Example:

English Voice to English text - server translate text (like at this site on toolbar) - Japanese Text to Japanese Voice

I admit the text to voice convertor might be limited in its translation of tone of the message from intonation of speech and inflection that comes from the rubato of spoken word. Maybe in time it can measure the pace, the raise in volume, the length of pauses, irony, but for now the nearest we can get to word for word meaning would be excellent.

Language and Visual Communication

fc37e6dd6823d39d2d0c4612453ce8b8 Language and Visual Communication

I think this was a good discussion talking about language and communicating without phonetics touching on quite a few forms of language and creativity. This was my thoughts below to this question.

Is it possible real ideographic way of communicate ideas? that is think, communicate and learn without phonetic chains? New era challenge require a more rapid and easy way of thinking.

My thoughts, love the discussion: http://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&gid=1782421&type=member&item=10926482

Susan Kare designed the trash can, apologies not checking who, someone mentioned basing language on gesture and I like the term grant put iconic physiology I think it was, still needs to be learned like phonetics. but she made the smiling face on load up of the Mac in 84'

When I was reading, I came across that language needed to search for the strongest metaphor (object) to relate meaning like an ideogram (pg 28-29 in my writings link below). But someone said they try to unlearn what they know and think of objects without words, I try it too. led me into representing objects through shapes, silhouettes. I also liked the story that a guy shuts his eyes, similar to Claude Heath and tries to draw the world, like Betty Edwards I think it was, drawing on the left side. altering our perception, being creative, looking at line drawings upside down for the first time you see it challenges you to work out what it is, you just copy it. not sure how the advance to not using phonetics. unlearning advances the creativity and ultimately the imagining of new ways I guess.

Logos do it, icons for blogger, wordpress (ok still letters), delicious, squidoo, digg (the people) these are universal, they're most widely seen (internet).

Brands do it, coca cola (letters I know).

I'm sure its got to involve more senses other than sight to be more widely applicable without phonetics. brail and tactility, still represent a letter in the alphabet though I think. But I like that the grid comes into it, all characters equal in size, maybe not area but equal height and relative width.

Similar to time dimension brought into sound with Morse code again representing letters. they look good graphically, cant remember the artist-designer

Still, a group of people would need to agree to discerned representations, otherwise how can they communicate complex thought like we're doing here? http://www.visualisationmagazine.com/dissertation.htm pg 28-29 about. Please share you thoughts, links.

My WordPress Web 2.0

8a5bd82c71fcb5d74ac29a2d4ddd9bc2 My Wordpress Web 2.0

When I was browsing through the search pages trying to find plugins that did the functionality i was after and checking the review/rating to see if it works or is the best or at least good..... what a farce!

You find good plugins from searching the million different posts that collate the 'top 30 wordpress plugins', 'top 100 wordpress...". Hours! The way I found the best plugins was to see them in use at other peoples wordpress blogs, where I found linkwithin, very good, lijit search, or when I received an email from a friend using mailchimp. I remember I tried to find a google suggest (predict your search) like plugin, I tried loads of plugins, myabe it was my limited knowledge of being able to tweak php, but non worked, eventually I did find one, ajax... even css customizable, works on a smart phone too! MAKE YOUR OWN!
Design I wanted to group them into categories, find a pattern that I could use. But some plugins crossed between categories, overlaps. The all work in conjunction with each other. I uploaded them to windows live shared space and made some bit.ly/WP15 associated to each plugin so you can download them and it saves on space for the design. They all stem from the center, around my blog. Dislikes I am not entirely satisfied with the bottom list with the referring creator of the plugin and the download address. Usability Just download the full image, there is enough quality to see the download link from bit.ly and plugin description. PLUGINS HYPERLINKS

What Makes Good Information Design v 1.0

I posted some curiousities here: http://visualthinkmap.ning.com/forum/topics/what-makes-an-information  or you can read more at my paper http://visualisationmagazine.com/blogvisualthinkmap/2009/11/how-do-visualisations-enhnce-the-communication-of-data.html    some great humorous visual of people entering an Sphincter which makes me think of Patch Adams with Robin Williams howdi gynos and people depicting fleas on a picture of a dog.

How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

6588811966236de963ce84e2efc14c17 How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

Finished my essay into how graphic design can enhance communication in data visualisation & information graphics:   visualisationmagazine.com/dissertation.htm     "graphic design ‘sorts and differentiates, it informs, it helps to shape how we feel, see the world’" (Newark, 2002, p. 6)   I look into areas such as (please note these intermix with each other):   a. Mind and Vision b. Communication c. Perception and Reality d. Semiotics e. Graphics   Within this paper I explore the creative and innovative design techniques for mapping information to aid thinking, understanding, comprehension and reasoning. I summarized the key points into guidelines for the at-a-glance findings.     "it may be possible to utilise symmetry and geometry to aid vision when perceiving a visualisation to understand data" (Wood and Keller, 1996, p 256)

This consideration of the way the map designer represents the world is not just associated with that of geographic cartograms but also with the way the designer visualises complex data.   "if the designer retained 100% truth, they would no longer be mapping, representing aspects of geographic space, it would be entirely realisitic, the territory"

These are some of the projects that I will certainly try to have a deeper
reader about from the aesthetics and computation group featuring john maeda and
ben fry. I was aware of the project below as most people are,

processing :
ben fry and casey reas

processing is an environment for learning the fundamentals of computer
programming within the context of the electronic arts. it is an electronic
sketchbook for developing ideas. processing is an open project initiated
by ben fry and casey reas, of the interaction design institute ivrea.

A very good group that i will certainly follow to keep
up-to-date as they try to explore language, mapping (space), communication.
Truly creative projects that I must have a good read, may just have to blog
individually upon further inspection. I found this group through http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/serialconsign/~3/PKLFOJPUrDM/information-visualization-and-interface-culture with a review of a chapter written by greg smith for Handbook of Research on Computational Arts and Creative Informatics which will be released
sometime in the next several weeks.

Typographic Nuance

 Typographic Nuance

'a typographic interpretation of obama's inauguration speech, made for dutch magazine 'creatie' the only rule was no images allowed... i decided to analyse the intonation by watching it on 'you tube' and breaking it down in terms of recurring words and emphasis...'

It is nice to finally see a more creative typographic approach to visualising obama's speeches. Looking at what i like to term typographic nuance, examining the use of alphabet & numbers paradigms.

It really delves into the literature from Post-structuralism, deconstruction (jacques derrida) & barthes, with authorship issues as the meaning (semantics of language) is determined by interpretation on part of the viewer, and so as barthes described this as being the death of the author who is unable to construct meaning.

‘The spoken word is, generally, less formal. Dialogues involve interaction (speaker and listener) are notoriously difficult to ‘control’. This, of course, is also their value; offering the creative, thinking process in its improvised form’ (david jury/about face pg 134).

Of course interpreation takes you into semiotics (the study of signs) with structuraliism french literary theory Ferdinand de Saussure who quite rightly 'posited that signs, rather than being isolated elements with self-contained meanings, are culturally independent parts of an overall network whose meaning is derived from the relationship between the parts’ (Dliteracy, heller/pomeroy, p149).

This cultural independancy is partly the reason that communication has these "open" interpretations of meanings that is where the wonderful (graphic design orientated blogger here) Cranbrook academy and Katerine McCoy, see French Currents of the Letter from 1978 which this work really reminds me of (r.poynor, p66) and jeff keedy & ed fella, then Cranbrook themes continued in David Carson & Neville Brody.

‘Reading requires that we use our intellect, but deconstructed typography further encourages a “shifting movement from awareness to knowledge, to desire and its negation”. The eye roams, looking into the printed page or glowing screen, where meaning is revealed through an evaluation of the entire space. Deconstruction has not simply addressed the look of design but a way of looking at the design’ (GD&R, gunnar swanson ed/zelman, p59).

This type and space led my research onto Stephane Mallarme with 'les coup de des' 1897. Mallarme states, ‘the poem “does not everywhere break with tradition; in its presentation I have in many ways not pushed it far enough forward to shock, yet far enough to open people’s eyes”’. This idea of engaging our intellect and making us interpret this space, typographic deconstruction (GD Concise History, hollis, p37).

Also not forgetting Guillaume Apollinaire with 'Calligrammes' 1918 leading off to concrete poetry and this fine design is continued with John Furnival & more recent mississippi, functioning ferdinand, 389-type, 3d-calligram, typographic-city-child and probably more.

This coninues quite rightly with word as image as the conversation does not need image as Creatia said no image. Lovely to see Infographics blended together with concrete poetry, I know it is monochrome but does it really need colour? wonderful work.

I explored typographic techniques with examples in my work, just leave comments or sign up to visualthinkmap.ning.com and message visualthinkmap i can share my findings back then.

Great project. Try the word links as there is a lot of good stuff i tried to link through to.

Mapping the Creative Process

 Mapping the Creative Process

Damn good stuff they make, wish they were more prolific in their creation but they are well
worth the wait. How appropriate then their next one is the Creative Process. I'm sure we all
think things can be included but they have pretty much nailed it. I am sure it will be doing the blog rounds as it is well deserved, but as from the blogs I am fed and try to digest from google reader it hasnt yet, so lets start the ball rolling.

Share with your many more readers than mine and explore their versatile and equally clear 'back catalogue'.

I tell you, the amount of posters I want to print so big and put up in a classroom, Periodic table of Typefaces, this, Periodic Table of Design, psd-poster - shortcuts by designbyvent, Type Timeline Map... and I'd be tempted with Periodic Table of Visualisation Methods, Information Aesthetics Diagram.

Here's what they say,

'The creative process is not just iterative; it’s also recursive. It plays out “in the large” and “in the small”— in defining the broadest goals and concepts and refining the smallest details. It branches like a tree, and each choice has ramifications, which may not be known in advance.

Recursion also suggests a procedure that “calls” or includes itself. Many engineers
define the design process as a recursive function:

discover > define > design > develop > deploy

The creative process involves many conversations—about goals and actions to achieve them—conversations with co-creators and colleagues, conversations with oneself.
The participants and their language, experience, and values affect the conversations'.
