Identified as one of the 9 creative 'hotspots' in the UK by Nesta, this location has some great places on offer. From Edinburgh printmakers studio, Analogue Books, The Fruitmarket Gallery @fruitmarket to round the corner Stills photography gallery, there appears to be a lot of bustling creativity that the platform of creative-edinburgh.com @CreativeEdin will be sure to promote and keep you abreast of its output both nationally and internationally.



Creative Maps share knowledge of creative facilities in the world, or more specifically Edinburgh's area to help you in your creative and innovative endeavors.

A new map of knowledge based on electronic data searches in which users moved
from one journal to another, thus establishing associations between them.


A new map of knowledge has been assembled by scientists at the research
library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is based on electronic data searches in which
users moved from one journal to another, thus establishing associations between them.


The map includes both the sciences and the humanities in a hub and wheel
arrangement, with the humanities at the center and the sciences arrayed around
them. The arrangement fell out naturally from the data and is not contrived,
said Johan Bollen, the leader of the research team.


In the map, published in the current issue of PLoS One, it has some great clustering and is excellant to realise through distance and colour their revelance to each other. The journals are color-coded as follows: physics, light purple; chemistry, blue; biology, green; medicine, red; social sciences, yellow; humanities, white; mathematics, purple; and engineering, pink. The interconnecting lines reflect the probability that a reader will click from one journal to another on the computer screen.

Similar maps have long been constructed on the basis of footnotes in one journal’s articles that refer to articles in other journals. Dr. Bollen believes that his electronic click map better represents scholars’ behavior than does citation analysis, as the footnote method is called.

Mapping Modernism

Not sure how I found the link but i discovered this intersting little timeline map of modernism. Colourful, capturing your atttention thorugh key with a soft white and grey column background to help seperate each individual year from 1910 - 1950.

Mapping Modernism charts 10 of the influencial designers for the period where you can scroll horizontally to see where these designers were at a point in time & click on the time bars to find out more like a concept map (scroll down for description). You can also see a designer's biography by clicking on their name. Some of the ones I know of being:

Serge Chermayeff
Theo Van Doesburg - De Stijl
E. McKnight Kauffer - his tessalating birds illustration for the underground ads.
& Laszlo Moholy-Nagy

The exhibition Modernism: Designing a brave New World - 1914 - 1939 was 'the first exhibition to explore the concept of Modernism in depth, rather than restricting itself, as previous exhibitions have, to particular geographical centres or to individual decades. Many forms of art and design are represented in the show. But as befits a period when the debates surrounding how people should live took centre stage, the exhibition focuses on architecture and design. The range of objects – including architectural, interior, furniture, product, graphic and fashion design as well as painting, sculpture, film, photography, prints, collage – reflects the period's emphasis on the unity of the arts and the key role of the fine arts in shaping contemporary visual culture'.

Some of these objects include the Club Chair by Marcel Breuer from the Bauhaus under Walter Gropius's leadership. But also the more graphic genius of Hary Beck's Underground Map that has spawned so many more stylised variations in 1933.

This was a great little map I saw posted on flickr from the user the high contrast (featured in blogroll). great how adobe chose their colours from the colour wheel and where they positioned the program icons.

Its ‘planets’ style with the 3D central gradient effect to the circles, and varying sizes create excellent salience as they grab your attention. The circular halo around ‘a band represents its popularity, the wider it is, the more popular or representative of a certain style of music it is’. The colour stands out against the soft grey background, ‘the colour of a very popular band, will influence the colour of the related bands’ (Worldwide, 2005, p. credits).     This varying size affects the information value very effectively, but as it is a Concept map, clicking one of the planets readjusts the circular halo (planets) to a series of bands that are associated to them, such as with The Ravonettes. The subtle, seamless, beautiful real time repositioning of the constellation to the associated bands with them is excellent. The interconnection of these information sources is immense and is not half, not nearly as visually stimulating viewed via plain words/sentences. Music Plasma has an interactive highly creative visual composition, visual map. It has mapped the knowledge of a map designers mind and allowed the seamless fluid motion to map user’s interaction.
