Photo Data App

59c877b168ea72a81b4f799df4eab91f Photo Data App

Seem to be possessed with apps at the moment, and they're not even all available for an Android-HTC-User blogger, not good. But I was sent this link to the 'the first app which enables iPhone users to create infographics on their devices'. http://www.photostatsapp.com/

Its not the fact that its infographics going wild, even saw a TED video that envisions health care on mobile devices as infographics etc, but I like the fact that Photo Stats 'analyzes metadata from the photos on camera roll' as the data source to visualise.

Ok , there is daytum and its app to record data and visualise, but you are manually inputting and intentionally recording this data to visualise. I am intrigued that as I shoot it speaks/shows 'user’s photo taking habits' and where abouts these photos were taken recorded from gps and EXIF metadata... is it?

All that data such as the camera type, the shutter speed etc  all data that should be visualised, not about the content of the photo.

But I liked it as I'm intrigued and started to record the geography not just photo, but emotion, feeling through written, showing taste? something looking appetising whet's the lips? anyhow i just explored and experimented as a start here: http://visualisationmagazine.com/dineography.htm . I know these aren't in the EXIF metadata but seems there is something more to photos like this app is trying to do with habits, regular places visited, times of the day, light levels... could add to the mood/atmosphere of a photo.

I leave with this:

'If an image is worth thousand words how much is an infographic about all your photos in the camera roll?'

Light Speed

Thought this video from the vast repository that there is on TED was well worth a post.

'What if every light bulb in the world could also transmit data? At TEDGlobal, Harald Haas demonstrates, for the first time, a device that could do exactly that. By flickering the light from a single LED, a change too quick for the human eye to detect, he can transmit far more data than a cellular tower -- and do it in a way that's more efficient, secure and widespread.'

Seen the futr

DSCF2832 300x225 Seen the futr

Yes I have been to the future (everything) and now I want to go Back to the #Futr! Wow, it was very good to say the least.

To see every issue of Nicholas Feltron's Annuals and to sound very sad touch a look through every one, see how they're bound was great. I sadly didnt make any of the talks I had planned. Although, I had the next best thing for one of them, the Icononomical Data and Infographics talk by Liz Turner I met by chance at the after show party having a healthy debate/chat about how data can be art as I and my co-curator collague of http://vism.ag/vol4 had inserted a business card for the mag in her hand.

She was curious and we eventually ended up looking through her presentation of the work she was going to show and hopefully managed to exchange/change each others opinion slightly to that of the one being the beauty and art of handmade in particular can enhance, add something to the graphic.

In the end it was late and we got turfed out of the free rasberry juice and gin party and we were imaging how fishing lines, pulleys and other ephmera that I'm sure would be quite a visualisation.

This was probably inspired no doubt by Hurrican Noel (above) which was a treat and reminds me off the mapping derby post recently. http://futureeverything.org/art/nathalie-miebach-a-duet-of-blizzards-and-hurricane-noel-ii/

My colleague attended much more of what the 4 days had to offer. He attended the fanzine convention at victoria baths, and there was some lovely zines made by OWT and others. Event | Victoria Baths Fanzine Convention theshriekingviolets.blogspot.com

Also see: http://www.facebook.com/fanzines

Alas I am still not quite finished as I have yet to read the aftershow book/program that has a lovely gold foil of the futr everything logo, featured an article looking at data vis by Manuel Lima of VisualComplexity.com and Kevin Smith, whose studying for his phd at lancaster, the co-curator of the the Data Arts exhibition also wrote up about data vis. Very good to meet him and put the dots together of realising who each other was from following on twitter.

And last but not least, there is much more that I could say there was Zach Gage with some raelly interesting projects to talk about through his generative art and this one http://futureeverything.org/art/zach-gage-hit-counter/ shame it couldn't record as people detect its a lense like myself having to approach right up to it.

http://futureeverything.org/art/data-dimension/

Awesome. Loads I didnt quite manage to see. But hopefully all recorded.

Future Everything

43d3a48aee58d6ee8eb9e49598e45b21 Future Everything

Art. Music. Ideas 11-14th May, Manchester UK. With an Art exhibition featuring Bestario see here http://vism.ag/55, the well known Nicholas Feltron see here http://vism.ag/3e, Mit project called Borderline, BBC Data Art project, Wilderness Downtown by Chris Milk & Aaron Koblin and what intirgues me and is a must to see is A Duet of Blizzards and Hurricanes Noel II by Nathalie Miebach.

Not only is there the art on show of data and mapping, you have the conference. Some intriguuing talks with Linked Data / LInked Stories sounding good as they look at data becoming more accessible everyday. Icononomical Data and Infographics looks good from icononomical founders. The internet of things that no longer exists, looking at the 24/7 of devices continuously connected to the internet in some way. Emotional Computing, Hacking Culture Urban Friction - Interfacing with the city.  On the 14th May Saturday a free confrence with open data hack and the manchester creative co-op.

My budget couldnt stretch to all these but they certainly intrigue me.  A zine exhibition to see and then the music. I'll be attending.

This is the group to share your submissions for the contest to feature your work on the cover, a double page spread and a blog post on GOOD Magazine blog & vism.ag/blog.

Your work will be judged by Density Design, Visualisation Magazine & GOOD Magazine

I want to emphasize handmade techniques like, etching, screen printing, metal press, lino, mono printing, drawn, paper folding. the only digital element would be the capturing of the work for the front cover to send us, or taking printed elements and manipulating them by hand... to an extent.

Visualise any subject you like (try not to be too offensive, would like all ages to appreciate) and to consider the:

  • Complexity
  • Innovation
  • Culture

Graph Depth of Field

 Graph Depth of Field

3d charts, very nice & clean.  'the brief for The Design Council Annual Review stipulated a more engaging way to look at the facts and figures representing three key areas of policy: Competitiveness, Sustainability and Innovation.'

'Rather than use two dimensional data, we worked with photographer Dan Tobin Smith to build an environment in which to house three-dimensional expressions of these key figures. The graphs levitate in the space, freed from being default statistical representations, becoming something more visually emotive.' Beautiful visualisation pushing the creative use of processing with these Word as Image abstract faces into the realm of concrete poetry. Made by scloopy aka Ryan Alexander see his site onecm.com.

McCann Erickson Manchester has created a poster campaign for a mental health organisation that combines photography and Processing (B.Fry & C.Reas) to great effect.

The two six sheet posters are for Leeds Counselling and will appear in doctors' surgeries, clinics, student halls and other suitable locations throughout Leeds.

How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

6588811966236de963ce84e2efc14c17 How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

Finished my essay into how graphic design can enhance communication in data visualisation & information graphics:   visualisationmagazine.com/dissertation.htm     "graphic design ‘sorts and differentiates, it informs, it helps to shape how we feel, see the world’" (Newark, 2002, p. 6)   I look into areas such as (please note these intermix with each other):   a. Mind and Vision b. Communication c. Perception and Reality d. Semiotics e. Graphics   Within this paper I explore the creative and innovative design techniques for mapping information to aid thinking, understanding, comprehension and reasoning. I summarized the key points into guidelines for the at-a-glance findings.     "it may be possible to utilise symmetry and geometry to aid vision when perceiving a visualisation to understand data" (Wood and Keller, 1996, p 256)

This consideration of the way the map designer represents the world is not just associated with that of geographic cartograms but also with the way the designer visualises complex data.   "if the designer retained 100% truth, they would no longer be mapping, representing aspects of geographic space, it would be entirely realisitic, the territory"

I am pleased as this means I have passed my MA Contemporary Arts Practice at York St John University investigating data visualisation, graphic design, information mapping. Read more background about me. Dont worry, I will still be blogging, collating and compiling the magazines.   See more projects developed from my studies:   visualisation magazine.com
