My WordPress Web 2.0

8a5bd82c71fcb5d74ac29a2d4ddd9bc2 My Wordpress Web 2.0

When I was browsing through the search pages trying to find plugins that did the functionality i was after and checking the review/rating to see if it works or is the best or at least good..... what a farce!

You find good plugins from searching the million different posts that collate the 'top 30 wordpress plugins', 'top 100 wordpress...". Hours! The way I found the best plugins was to see them in use at other peoples wordpress blogs, where I found linkwithin, very good, lijit search, or when I received an email from a friend using mailchimp. I remember I tried to find a google suggest (predict your search) like plugin, I tried loads of plugins, myabe it was my limited knowledge of being able to tweak php, but non worked, eventually I did find one, ajax... even css customizable, works on a smart phone too! MAKE YOUR OWN!
Design I wanted to group them into categories, find a pattern that I could use. But some plugins crossed between categories, overlaps. The all work in conjunction with each other. I uploaded them to windows live shared space and made some bit.ly/WP15 associated to each plugin so you can download them and it saves on space for the design. They all stem from the center, around my blog. Dislikes I am not entirely satisfied with the bottom list with the referring creator of the plugin and the download address. Usability Just download the full image, there is enough quality to see the download link from bit.ly and plugin description. PLUGINS HYPERLINKS

How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

6588811966236de963ce84e2efc14c17 How do visualisations enhance the communication of data?

Finished my essay into how graphic design can enhance communication in data visualisation & information graphics:   visualisationmagazine.com/dissertation.htm     "graphic design ‘sorts and differentiates, it informs, it helps to shape how we feel, see the world’" (Newark, 2002, p. 6)   I look into areas such as (please note these intermix with each other):   a. Mind and Vision b. Communication c. Perception and Reality d. Semiotics e. Graphics   Within this paper I explore the creative and innovative design techniques for mapping information to aid thinking, understanding, comprehension and reasoning. I summarized the key points into guidelines for the at-a-glance findings.     "it may be possible to utilise symmetry and geometry to aid vision when perceiving a visualisation to understand data" (Wood and Keller, 1996, p 256)

This consideration of the way the map designer represents the world is not just associated with that of geographic cartograms but also with the way the designer visualises complex data.   "if the designer retained 100% truth, they would no longer be mapping, representing aspects of geographic space, it would be entirely realisitic, the territory"

I am pleased as this means I have passed my MA Contemporary Arts Practice at York St John University investigating data visualisation, graphic design, information mapping. Brand Equity Visualisation

 Brand Equity Visualisation

I thought this was an excellant diagram showing the interrelationships among
leading brand equity models of interbrand, aaker & simon and sullivan used to evaluate a brands ability to create value.

see here for defintions: Michael Porters Value Chain linked to Brand Equity Model Measures by vtm - at the bottom also.

quick summary, interbrand are used by the worlds leading brands to asses the
global monetary value of their brand to help them i their decision to buy sell
their brands. Diageo used interbrand to measure the value of PIllsbury brand
before selling, and others i havent researched.

long story short, my research in my studies relating to Design in Business led
me to Brand Equity and its measures and this wonderful diagram showed how
Interbrand, worlds leading brand valuer, didnt utilise this 'Brand Association'
attribute that other models do that arent as bigger global business.

This attribute measured 'success at creating a value image' that much
advertising is trying to do as they try to make you attach 'values', i.e.
wealth, cheapest, efficient, elegance etc to their Logo's/Brands.

I added, back in 2005, further boxes branching off from 'Brand Association' that
ought to be measured by Interbrand such as, the competency of the advertising
agency who are trying to create this value image. AMV BBDO are damn good and
experienced and multi award winning at achieving values for brands.

Directors, the same, Frank Budgen has won many ad awards at creating value
through a brand image.

well my studies

4 years later they will have probably already integrated this into their
measures of brand value when rankking coca cola, macdonalds & microsoft
(they were top when i was researching).

Mapping Genes

d0c55545569e562c2f92be46469d0f37 Mapping Genes

Mapping the Human 'Diseasome' by Marc Vidal; Albert-Laszlo Barabasi; Michael Cusick

really like this, clean simplification of a complex subject showing the amount of genes associated with that disease. Researchers created a map linking different diseases, represented by circles, to the genes they have in common, represented by squares. love the size ratio and soft pastels colours.

Text 2 Mind Map

ad4abd48d1ebd59d64a848a9d396db87 Text 2 Mind Map

This is an excellant, easy to use online mind mapping tool.

Visualise your ideas, thoughts in the text editor on the left, to create a new node/level simply use TAB key and to go back a level, new main node BACKSPACE key, like you do in WORD. Honestly, you need to nothing of design, mind mapping, visualising and it creates the top map that you can view full screen with the controls on the right.

As for the quality of the visualisation, the more TAB levels you create the colours automatically create give you an excellant single tone harmony (faber birren) and it changes in its size both working together to create a very effective hierachy of information. You can change the colours.

The functionality is excellant, simple, clear and to make it transferrable from their site you can easily click Save Map and it generates a flattened jpeg that opens in a new window, so allow popups.

To make changes just tweak your text editor on left and click convert to mind map.

I shouldn't go over the top, but to find such a easy, effective, simple to use online tool is great for those who prefer the speed of digital manipulation, than that of on paper and then having to scan/photog to share digitally, very good.

I just shared some ideas of my research from particular books to test its visualisation effects.

Thanks Arnaud, again...

Memory Visual

memory+visual+v8+iso+copyright Memory Visual

I wanted to understand the difference between Kbps and Kb, memory and internet speeds.

Internet - data transfer speeds is - kbps = kilo bits per sec
Memory - file sizes/capacity is - KBps = Kilo Bytes per sec

8 bits = 1 byte

So on a 56 k... bits per sec modem (dial up) you can download 7 Kilo Bytes Per Sec. of a particular file.

Therefore if you follow the bottom with the icons you can see the file sizes/capacities of different hardware/software... could in future differentiate/seperate the 2 but most people are aware of what is hardware and which is software. Allows for contextualising the file sizes/capacities together, tufte would say seperate.

Suppose people have to remember that it increments in hundreds for KB, then increments in hundreds for MB, GB.... So there isnt the same amount measured. there is a new ratio.

tried to make this explicit with the MB ratio to B, i.e. 1 MB = 1,000,000 Bytes

I provide a table to give estimates of total secs for particular file sizes, linking the differentiated ratios to the KB, MB ratio's.

Well, creating this helped me realise the actual download file size/capacity of my broadband which isnt 2MBps (basic sky), it is 244KBps, slightly smaller.

I love how the isometric gives the non-physical data an abstract space, and make you associate file sizes, speeds with volume, area, capacity like its filling land creating measure of distance associated with time. Its no longer just stats & figures.

Memory sticks, ipods are now topographic landmarks that can be contrasted in their volume/file size capacity to each other.

There may be a better rendering, representation of the data, maybe an isometric '3d' treemap, or an isometric pyramid, but I think it is a pretty good attempt to simplify complex data with quite a few variables,

internet data speed - dial up 56kbps, broadband, wireless broadband
internet download times - i.e. not just per seconds... i give average totals
file sizes/capacity - B, KB, MB, GB
contemporary products/prices - their capacity in relation

well much help was from here with calculating data speeds/file size per sec

almost like for like table of estimate file/broadband times

Subway Blogs Map

cc007eb0b24f585e19ceff9fee78a792 Subway Blogs Map

Names Authors

An excellant visualisation taking another fantastic subway (hary beck) subversion visualisation similiar to the web-trend-map-2008-beta by the information architects, except instead of mapping mapping the internet terrain, mapping claude ashcenbrenner's (at serial mapper) blogs/RSS links archive.

He cleverly structures the content of his blogs using the paris subway map layout of lines by renaming them as:

Visualisation
Teaching
Thinkers
Business Intelligence
Missing In Action
Mind Mapping
Network
Creativity
& Humour

To arrange all these blogs into an easy to follow, complex/diverse/similarities content ordered, clean spatial structure is a real achievement. It has this easy to the eye pink background and beige centre that allows the Blue and Green names easy to focus on and follow along the lines. But if it isnt enough of an achivement to arrnage these complex/diverse blogs in a great connectivist structure, he still added further depth by simply subtly differentiating between French & English blogs without having to compomise his overall layout much at all merely a small key to say:

green - english
blue - french

Making it bilingual to help when navigating.

He was exporting this to pdf so that it is a fully interactive hyperlinks attached to the blog name nodes concept map. make in more engaging yet further.

He breaks it into 2 output version of the authors and one for the names, both using the same spatial location along his different lines so as to easily correlate the authors with their blogs.

I love it as you can probably guess.

Here are cluade's comments (forgive translation, may not be absolutely correct)

'You've probably noticed this blog is somewhat artistic. Indeed unlike the practice you can not find the list of my favorite blogs. In fact I think for a long time, but procrastination also achieved all that we must say that I was not sure how to keep all my RSS feeds in a reasonable space ..

I finally found the solution obviously in the form of a map. You will therefore find below a selection of 70 blogs devoted to mapping information encapsulated in a subway map.

Parisians (and others - °) recognize a part of the metropolitan network to which were added some tram lines. This plan is bilingual French / English including heads of line that I let you discover ... The francophone (in Blue) is represented by nearly 40 blogs, many of which have emerged in the last year ..

This device is designed to encourage you to leave your usual lines by taking paths through it.
Ca n'al'air nothing but a path we must remember that the term method has been built from a Greek word meaning old way .... So Good cognitive walk!

Each blog is associated a subway station. Place your mouse URL appears, click will open a new window to view the blog.'

Love his concept of 'leaving usual lines by taking paths through it', much like my work with the recent http://visualthinkmap.blogspot.com/2008/09/notebook-route-map.html. Could be called Blog Route Visualisation, but Blog Subway Map infer's that quite effectively.

Aa soon as I spot I know a link to Claude's interactive version, trust i will repost this. Great aid to exploring blogs of similiar content/interests/terrain that can be used in an instant, just how you more often then not want a visualisation's performance (function) to do.

Fantastic claude

Enjoy the journey
