Edinburgh is the latest creative map to be rendered, vism.ag/edinburgh. Mapped in collaboration with creative-edinburgh.com launching Thursday 3rd November, 6 - 8pm at The Cube, 47 Leith Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3AT.

Identified as one of the 9 creative 'hotspots' in the UK by Nesta, this location has some great places on offer. From Edinburgh printmakers studio, Analogue Books, The Fruitmarket Gallery @fruitmarket to round the corner Stills photography gallery, there appears to be a lot of bustling creativity that the platform of creative-edinburgh.com @CreativeEdin will be sure to promote and keep you abreast of its output both nationally and internationally.

Creative Maps share knowledge of creative facilities in the world, or more specifically Edinburgh's area to help you in your creative and innovative endeavors.

This looks great. Google maps and history merged into one. I wondered about how we merge the old and the new somehow.

I am keen to do old historical street maps overlayed on top of interactive google, try to bring a spice of art with the idea of collaging like Mercato previous post.

But its free, it has pretty good clustering of pins as you zoom in and drill down the data so it doesn't become crowded like it could do. From the group We are what we Do, who bring you the beautiful Change the world for a fiver book talking about going green.

Also with it being supported by google you can sign up with your google details quite easily.

Quilted Information

map quilts by leah evans

leah evans is a textile artist based in madison, wisconsin. she makes quilts that are far from traditional. each piece features a map which is hand-sewn in fine detail forming an almost abstract pattern. evans uses appliqué, reverse appliqué, piecing, natural and synthetic dyeing, needle-felting, hand printing and a variety of embroidery to make each piece. she takes the imagery from maps, aerial photography and satellite images. however she doesn’t simply translate maps onto here quilts, instead she creates imaginary lands uses elements from
different maps.

Also equally interesting, not by leah, is with aesthetics relating to DNA and the Gnome is here

a series of quilt designs, based on genetic code. a square, bisected into a
light & dark triangle, is rotated in 4 orientations to resemble the letters

C, G, A & T, the 4 DNA bases.

Street Map

I think this was based on GPS but had beautiful colours and layering done recording geographical data over a year. There are others at the flickr link that cover the world and different areas. I particularly like this one.

Cartographic Shapes

this is a great application for facebookm, called Geo Challenge. helps you learn your countries/geography starting off with just the shape and fading in the ajoining/nearby countries to help you realise the paticularly country. they have a round for flags, and cities (usually guessing myself) placing where they are on the world map.

great game and great tool for learning. it helps me with my pathetic knowledge of world geography/cities, although i'm not that bad at flags.
