looks really good. IA's previous versions were very good, and they have managed
to improve upon them.

loved the isometric, but they have given it further depth like the tubes and it
has the level of popularity with the height dimension explored.

I like how they have brought in the people symbols/isotypes walking in this
new geographic terrain of the web similar to what was done on this

I wanted to understand the difference between Kbps and Kb, memory and internet speeds.

Internet - data transfer speeds is - kbps = kilo bits per sec
Memory - file sizes/capacity is - KBps = Kilo Bytes per sec

8 bits = 1 byte

So on a 56 k... bits per sec modem (dial up) you can download 7 Kilo Bytes Per Sec. of a particular file.

Therefore if you follow the bottom with the icons you can see the file sizes/capacities of different hardware/software... could in future differentiate/seperate the 2 but most people are aware of what is hardware and which is software. Allows for contextualising the file sizes/capacities together, tufte would say seperate.

Suppose people have to remember that it increments in hundreds for KB, then increments in hundreds for MB, GB.... So there isnt the same amount measured. there is a new ratio.

tried to make this explicit with the MB ratio to B, i.e. 1 MB = 1,000,000 Bytes

I provide a table to give estimates of total secs for particular file sizes, linking the differentiated ratios to the KB, MB ratio's.

Well, creating this helped me realise the actual download file size/capacity of my broadband which isnt 2MBps (basic sky), it is 244KBps, slightly smaller.

I love how the isometric gives the non-physical data an abstract space, and make you associate file sizes, speeds with volume, area, capacity like its filling land creating measure of distance associated with time. Its no longer just stats & figures.

Memory sticks, ipods are now topographic landmarks that can be contrasted in their volume/file size capacity to each other.

There may be a better rendering, representation of the data, maybe an isometric '3d' treemap, or an isometric pyramid, but I think it is a pretty good attempt to simplify complex data with quite a few variables,

internet data speed - dial up 56kbps, broadband, wireless broadband
internet download times - i.e. not just per seconds... i give average totals
file sizes/capacity - B, KB, MB, GB
contemporary products/prices - their capacity in relation

With the innovation and development of internet 3g enabled mobile phones technology with the fantastic Iphone from apple, it is important that other technology's are there to support it.
When reasearching about internet speeds I learnt more about wireless internet speeds. In the uk I had heard of 3G but I never realised that this represented wireless internet.
Well when i realised that there had been 2G sm (global systems for mobile communication) with a data transfer of 14.4 kbps (kilo bits per sec), worse that dial-up 56 k bps modem, not kilo bytes per sec, read this page for lyberty.com/encyc/articles/kb_kilobytes.html better understanding of data transfer & file size, I soon learnt more.
3G has a data transfer rate of 2 mbps (mega bits per sec), now as I found it a trall trying to find the transfer rates for 2G & 3G I read that not everywhere, especially in america, has 3G wireless access/coverage. Making your Iphone 3G enabled connection pretty slow.
This made me curious as to the possibility of a world map that shows where and what wireless internet connection speeds are available, as there different networks such as 2.5G PRS (32 kbps), HSCSD (57.6 kbps), EDGE (384 kbps) and... there is.
The GSM Association and coveragemaps.com are proud to announce the availability of the updated GSM World Coverage map for 2008. This publication is available in printed form at all GSM Association events and can also be downloaded in PDF using the links below. Unfortunately we are unable to post copies of the map. This maps is updated from time-to-time and new versions can be identified by a change in the colour used for coverage.
Europe has quite a good coverage of 3G connection speeds for your Iphone (depicted in yellow).

This is a great complex domains visualisation of how we are provided with our unique url website addresses.

The creators of this domain name system diagram hope to provide a comprehensive picture of how its governed, how it works and what it is.

They keep clean and minimal to help you feel at ease navigating this complex map and a hint of yellow for a starting point guide along the many multidirectional connections.

Along with the yellow they also suggest you can start anywhere or go from 'people' no 1 grey arrow (very small). They have these arrows numbered around which you can use to navigate it as well.

TLD's are Top Level Domain names that are run by Registars such as VeriSign who buy the rights to run .com's ($115,000) & .nets ($115,000) & Afilas who run .info ($115,000). They have to provide public access to their databases searchable at whois.net and purchase these TLD's from ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names & Numbers) a non-profit organisation chartered by US government.

I read just a little from the 'people' and followed it easily, recognising whois and hwo they fit into it all.

Snack on my Maps

Having seen quite a few internet visualisations such as that of the Information Architects - web trend map in a Harry Beck style seen a few times & Opte Project in these spider web constellation style, it was great to see a more graphic impression of it.

I know it was made in 2006 by the artist group Eboy, mentioned in Viz Think 08 post, but Foo Bar is great visual thinking. I first saw their excellant intricatly detailed environments in Illustration Now! although probably aware of that style in circa.

With Myspace street or Blogger as a subway system it uses these popular visuals of internet brands and interprets these into imaginative chaos happening in downtown, urban, industrial setting with physical locations. There are even physical items included such as Ipod's as well as yahoo looking like it is being packed away.

I'm quite curious as to what lost fm is playing from its van but I'd love to assume that the literal interpretation of RSS feeds is represented as a Snack Bar, or maybe deli.icio.us could be or as a advertisement for food. Would be a great visual for feeding.

Either way this illustration is great for eliciting creative visual thinking as a student soon discovered after they had picked eboy as a fave for analysis, scary word.

Talking about Viz Think 08 (David Gray Blog - Communication Nation) Stephen Few expresses concerns over drawings. The other speakers hired 'they don’t accurately represent the spectrum of visual thinking, and that the list of topics is heavily skewed, primarily toward the use of drawings to record ideas (such as during a brainstorming meeting) or in printed form to explain something, such as a concept or process' (Visual Business Intelligence A blog by Stephen Few).

He express his concerns over visual thinking at Viz Think 08 not just being about drawing in his blog post Not every picture is worth a thousand words (dec 07). He rightly points out that visual thinking should include the exciting ways in which it 'is supported by technology today: information visualization—”the use of computer-supported interactive visual representations of abstract data to amplify cognition” (Card, Mackinlay, and Shneiderman, Readings in Information Visualization: Using Vision to Think - Interactive Technologies, 1999).

Technologies that created the previous post featuring Julien Bayles Dynamic Clock. I stumbled accross the image featured that I thought was a great spatial visualisation of the aspects involved in visual thinking that I assume is by Stephen Few. Its similiar style to the artist Eboy featured in Illustration Now! - 150 Illustrators featuring some of these technologies that integrate into this visual thinking spectrum such as navigating Virtual Worlds or Video Communication distributed by Utube via what should be featured in the illustration the internet. I particularly like the guy featured in the bottom right, 'communication skills, problem solving & drawing' definetly needed to visually think & design - solve.

But technology does have a huge influence on visual thinking, it allows us to communicate/collaborate ideas accross the world/virtual world instantly it also allows us to catalogue/collate these wonderful & varied abstract data visualisations from notebooks to concept maps.

Not all visual maps are prescribed to geographic content. Moving away from the past 3 maps of geography but continuing the theme of technology, there is this wonderful map from the Information Architects mapping popular internet websites.

In its second version they've 'taken almost 300 of the most influential and successful websites and pinned them down to the greater Tokyo-area train map. By popular demand, we enlarged the poster size from A3 to A0' (greber, 2008, web-trend-map-2008-beta).

In the popular style of train/underground maps, first started by Harry Beck’s London Underground map, which he developed from 1931 onwards, they are being subverted into alternative content, like here of websites map. Their clear, clean white space [1] is highly effective for organisation of information.

It is a type of

concept map

that is similar to brainstorms where it connects ideas and to that of mind maps. They are ‘graphical representation[s] where nodes (points or vertices) represent concepts (defined by [Joseph .D] Novak[2] as perceived regularities in objects and events), and links (arcs or lines) represent the relationships between concepts’. These objects and events are the common features which we abstract from our experience. The events form Wordsworth’s childhood memories that are ‘“sources of adult confidence and creativity”’ and helped him when writing Daffodils, or the visual memories in Barcelona of Picasso that inspired the painting of ‘Les Demoiselles of D’avignon’ and the objects could be the Iberian sculpture, or the Monet painting that also inspired him (Coffey, Hoffman, Cañas, & Ford, 2002, p. 2), (Sharples, 1999, p. 48).

‘Concept maps are used to form knowledge models by placing them in a hierarchical organization and appending elaborating media onto the nodes within each map’ (Montello, 2002, p.2). An excellent example of this is the search engine KartOO. The elaborate media stated are the hyperlinks, animations that are activated when you click on one of the nodes (website names).

Overall it is an excellant map utilising white space & framing knowledge beautifully, brilliant balance of form/function. More articles will come featuring projects mapping the internet.
