Route 66 Story Map

This is a great project on mapping the history and narratives of a journey/terrain. A sort of map that is more interesting than the territory that Houellebecq proposed.

Looking to use video and record data on a journey, much like Stephen Shore has done on his journey's across america but only through photography. Just multimedia and more forms of it. I'd like to merge the projects Poetry Atlas & History Pin and maybe this atlascine.org that I recently saw but not just Canada.

More about the project 'Jay Crim and Shekar Davarya spent the summer of 2002 driving across the country on Route 66, collecting interviews with the people who live, work and travel on the old road. The audio, video and images on this map are the result of that summer, and offer a glimpse into what life was like on the now-decommissioned highway and what remains for those who still travel the road. The America's Highway project was intended to create both a history lesson on America of the past as well as a travel guide for visitors on 66 today. The work was supervised by Professor Bill Leslie, History of Science Department and Mike Reese, Center for Educational Resources, The Johns Hopkins University.'

Book Cutouts


This Is Where We Live from 4th Estate on Vimeo.

These are very nice books visalised into a typographic territory through cutouts by Peter Cookridge & James Birdle (directed by asylum's ben falk & jos newbolt.

It is a stop motion film and features an entire city made out of books and covers from publishing house, 4th estate's titles.

they visualise scenes that cookreidge describes as 'in jokes' such as a man falling off a boat which is the scene from title book 'The Corrections'.

The production design is by Pippa Culpepper who crafts these beautiful artefacts.

Blank Canvas



Reminds me of the artists christo & jean claude wrapping the arch way in italy and other places. The commercial is called 'Blank Canvas' and questions what would be possible if all design ideas could start from a blank piece of canvas. Great changing of our perspectives and making us re-see the world which a good designer/artist learns to do.

Learning to Look: A Handbook for the Visual Arts (Phoenix Books)(visual thinking), good book by joshua c taylor.

The all new Ford Kuga, which may just make it State side in a few years, combines Ford's new kinetic design with all-wheel-drive and on-and-off-road capability. How well Europe will receive this new CUV will be known when the Kuga goes on sale in June.

The commercial was directed by Danish director Nicolai Fuglsig, who also directed guinness domino ad which was a great triumph for their brand I think returning them back to their surreal, quirky, mexican-look brilliance started by amv bbdo with Snail Racing (bet on black) by directed by frank budgen, Swimmer by directed by jonathon glazer & of course Surfers by j glazer (who also did dreamer with those great squirrels).

Now Guinness made you visually think.

Anyhow veared off from Nicolai's great wrapped blank canvas ad, the music is by French singer Camille.

Although these visualisations may not be as highly creative depicting the
human body with its silky intricacies, smooth colours without the more intimate
depth perception created by with the 3d perspective they are still as
informative.

World of Art Game

This was a great diagram I discovered that helps understand/simplify some of the complexities of the art world in an excellantly designed visualisation.

Adelheid Mers subverts this diagrma of rather than being just a diagram he would transform it into a game, with players following the artists.

Start life at college, finish with a clear mind. It has excellant pictographic symbols of people/places with clean, soft contrasts/graduation of monochromatic colours.

'ABOUT WORLD OF ART: Curator Mary Jane Jacob had seen the diagrams after Lakoffat the Chicago Open Studio, and commissioned me to create a poster for a workshop symposium she was organizing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago:

"Setting Up Your Art and Your Life - Strategies for a Sustained Practice".

The idea was to create a diagram of an artist, not based on a book, but on my own expertise. Conjuring up elements I wished to include, it first became apparent how crowded the world of art is (artists, audiences, curators, juries, dealers, students, critics, historians etc.), then how many locations are involved, and then, in discussion with Mary Jane, it became very clear that how we value the players and the locales varies greatly as well.

As the task was not to diagram my personal belief system, two design possibilities presented themselves: to indicate all possible varieties, or to make a game in which all possibilities are evoked. The game seemed to be appropriate, and it was printed on the rear of the poster that announced the symposium, as a treat of sorts. Later I also printed a larger version and made game pieces to go along with it'.

The trident gum ads caused quite a bit of controversy with their creative, pastel coloured surreal ads surrounded around mastification.

Trident imaginatively concieve this idea of the mastification lobe in the brain. 'The mastication lobe is the largest member of the lobe family and is the part of the brain responsible for receiving and processing chewing pleasure. When a human man or woman chews, the taste and texture receptors on the upper tongue send trillions of tiny pleasure signals direct to the mastication lobe via an intricate network of neural pathways.'

It is quirky and uses these crisp pastel colours and graph paper visual along with the tagline 'mastication for the nation' which is where it had problems with ASA (advertising standards authority) here in the UK and subsequently had to stop their campaign, only after it had already been seen in abundance by the public.

Great thinking, mastificate yourself.

This was to visualise the top brands spatially and who owns them/other brands they own also. I started off with well known brand portfolios to visualise them like colgate palmolive but had no direction. So found this top ten list for 2007, and worked from here.

I liked the vector curved lines like with Maeda's Key magazine covrer post. kept to a soft blue, red pastel palette so you can really visualise the brands and their order, arrangment, ownership.
