Pixel Rolling

This might be old, but how great is it. Paint your screen. I am intrigued at some point to find out what solenoids are that 'control paint-emission', Audi Design Foundation, Design in Action publication.

'PixelRoller is a paint roller that paints pixels, designed by Stuart Wood, Florian Ortkrass & Hannes Koch as a rapid response printing tool specifically to print digital information such as imagery or text onto a great range of surfaces. The content is applied in continuous strokes by the user. PixelRoller can be seen as a handheld “printer”, based around the ergonomics of a paintroller, that lets you create the images by your own hand.' random-international.com/pixelroller-overview/# .

. Originally by Wood & Ortkrass whilst postgraduating (lets make words) at the RCA, Audi DF I want to know if it can control more colours, or do you have to change paint supply? the computer keeps it in registration (alignment) so you can re-paint over the same part of an image and controls the supply of paint, bit like using the same clone point in Adobe Photoshop (love doing that into a blank document from an image with a wacky brush).

.

. This is part of the V&A Museums permanent collection of (I assume...) con-temporary printing machines, or in the Audi - Design in Action publication the 'temporary printing machines and with clients like Nokia, Coke Zero & Oracle. The publication did have some lovely tracked type and spreads combining red, black and beautiful white space. .

.

'The software for the first PixelRoller prototype was created using processing which proved invaluable to the development process.' random-international.com/pixelroller-overview/#

That processing by Casey Reas and Ben Fry I think it was... whilst at the Aesthetics & Computation Group headed by John Maeda is finding some truly versatile uses.

Periodic Table of Controllers

 Periodic Table of Controllers

by member mike. check out the other periodic's here Periodic table of Typefaces.

There's been a recent flurry of discoveries, it can be subverted into so many forms. I quite like this Console controllers, makes me nostalgic to SNES. Check this post too, Nintendo Map.

Great to visualise the marks on a pad without the shape and just the buttons. Spotted on vi.sualise.us great sort of clipmark, image bookmarking tool. great way to compile inspiration. Saves searching through links, or places you discovered work.

World Wireless Map

With the innovation and development of internet 3g enabled mobile phones technology with the fantastic Iphone from apple, it is important that other technology's are there to support it.
When reasearching about internet speeds I learnt more about wireless internet speeds. In the uk I had heard of 3G but I never realised that this represented wireless internet.
Well when i realised that there had been 2G sm (global systems for mobile communication) with a data transfer of 14.4 kbps (kilo bits per sec), worse that dial-up 56 k bps modem, not kilo bytes per sec, read this page for lyberty.com/encyc/articles/kb_kilobytes.html better understanding of data transfer & file size, I soon learnt more.
3G has a data transfer rate of 2 mbps (mega bits per sec), now as I found it a trall trying to find the transfer rates for 2G & 3G I read that not everywhere, especially in america, has 3G wireless access/coverage. Making your Iphone 3G enabled connection pretty slow.
This made me curious as to the possibility of a world map that shows where and what wireless internet connection speeds are available, as there different networks such as 2.5G PRS (32 kbps), HSCSD (57.6 kbps), EDGE (384 kbps) and... there is.
The GSM Association and coveragemaps.com are proud to announce the availability of the updated GSM World Coverage map for 2008. This publication is available in printed form at all GSM Association events and can also be downloaded in PDF using the links below. Unfortunately we are unable to post copies of the map. This maps is updated from time-to-time and new versions can be identified by a change in the colour used for coverage.
Europe has quite a good coverage of 3G connection speeds for your Iphone (depicted in yellow).

Nokia Map

The new Nokia 6220 advertisement promoting its mapping technology available on it with, a giant collaborative map. Contrasting close ups of people of varying ages with close ups of pencils/pens even a wonderfully kept one of the pencil nib breaking it creates an excellant mix of creativity, enjoyment and concentration.

No surprise of its brilliance from Wieden & Kennedy, they just do it, sorry about the pun.
