Sound Shirt

fp page 3 instore Sound Shirt

This was devised from a D&AD brief from the pair Sam Mosley and Sarah Mullen and reminds me very much of Sound Sewing that I posted a while ago.

The D&AD brief was,

'create an original and underground viral to drive a diverse aand creative audience to clothing brand Fred Perry's Sub Culture music website'.

Maybe they saw the same thing i had but no doubt they married the music and the clothes perfectly. I need to check if they achieved the technology or if it was just the idea in the video they created of the brilliant White Stipes Seven nation army playing froman ipod hooked up to a sewing machine. plenty of peaks and waves in the sound to create a personalised t shirt.

Think i may have said in the sound sewing post, but i love the unique visual of the soundwave is the accurate form of phonetics, as opposed to arbitary language of the abstract alphabet.

I'd have one of Seven Nation Army, not necessarily a fred perry t shirt. Without quoitng too much of the CR mag's sept 2010 issue (i know it took this long to post it) but, they mention,

'creatives are in a prviliged position to be able to fill up every possible media space that the public comes accross day to day, so it really shouldnt be just any old crap'.

EuroVisualisation

c6dab3f2ab5107fbc2ad9836e7d16f49 EuroVisualisation

I saw this on InfoAesthetics.com , always brilliant. I need key with this, something telling me the douze points or zwolf points of which colours rather than just size so i can discern the order.

See a video here: http://visualthinkmap.ning.com/video/eurovisualisation-1 (the embed kept crashing explorer)

From blob.creanode.com/blob/eu2009 is a simple interactive visualization. Each country is represented by a circle. Moving over a specific country reveals who voted for that country and by how much.

Another Eurosong Contest Visualization and another EuroVision Contest Visualization (see 3rd example) @ InfoAesthetics.com

See tashian.com/wine-flavors/ (had a facelift with some category labels added).

Typographic Nuance

 Typographic Nuance

'a typographic interpretation of obama's inauguration speech, made for dutch magazine 'creatie' the only rule was no images allowed... i decided to analyse the intonation by watching it on 'you tube' and breaking it down in terms of recurring words and emphasis...'

It is nice to finally see a more creative typographic approach to visualising obama's speeches. Looking at what i like to term typographic nuance, examining the use of alphabet & numbers paradigms.

It really delves into the literature from Post-structuralism, deconstruction (jacques derrida) & barthes, with authorship issues as the meaning (semantics of language) is determined by interpretation on part of the viewer, and so as barthes described this as being the death of the author who is unable to construct meaning.

‘The spoken word is, generally, less formal. Dialogues involve interaction (speaker and listener) are notoriously difficult to ‘control’. This, of course, is also their value; offering the creative, thinking process in its improvised form’ (david jury/about face pg 134).

Of course interpreation takes you into semiotics (the study of signs) with structuraliism french literary theory Ferdinand de Saussure who quite rightly 'posited that signs, rather than being isolated elements with self-contained meanings, are culturally independent parts of an overall network whose meaning is derived from the relationship between the parts’ (Dliteracy, heller/pomeroy, p149).

This cultural independancy is partly the reason that communication has these "open" interpretations of meanings that is where the wonderful (graphic design orientated blogger here) Cranbrook academy and Katerine McCoy, see French Currents of the Letter from 1978 which this work really reminds me of (r.poynor, p66) and jeff keedy & ed fella, then Cranbrook themes continued in David Carson & Neville Brody.

‘Reading requires that we use our intellect, but deconstructed typography further encourages a “shifting movement from awareness to knowledge, to desire and its negation”. The eye roams, looking into the printed page or glowing screen, where meaning is revealed through an evaluation of the entire space. Deconstruction has not simply addressed the look of design but a way of looking at the design’ (GD&R, gunnar swanson ed/zelman, p59).

This type and space led my research onto Stephane Mallarme with 'les coup de des' 1897. Mallarme states, ‘the poem “does not everywhere break with tradition; in its presentation I have in many ways not pushed it far enough forward to shock, yet far enough to open people’s eyes”’. This idea of engaging our intellect and making us interpret this space, typographic deconstruction (GD Concise History, hollis, p37).

Also not forgetting Guillaume Apollinaire with 'Calligrammes' 1918 leading off to concrete poetry and this fine design is continued with John Furnival & more recent mississippi, functioning ferdinand, 389-type, 3d-calligram, typographic-city-child and probably more.

This coninues quite rightly with word as image as the conversation does not need image as Creatia said no image. Lovely to see Infographics blended together with concrete poetry, I know it is monochrome but does it really need colour? wonderful work.

I explored typographic techniques with examples in my work, just leave comments or sign up to visualthinkmap.ning.com and message visualthinkmap i can share my findings back then.

Great project. Try the word links as there is a lot of good stuff i tried to link through to.

You dont need to be able to read spanish* to undertand this infographic by Samuel Granados, well maybe a little for deeper ajudication.

desaprobacion = diapproval - red

Found on density design and samuel has no doubt lost none of their brilliant design skills being a former student in information graphics + function + beauty as this parchment effect paper gives it a historical document of 'manuscript' importance. With a lovely surreality of an abstract cutting of the top head technique it has some harmony of green and red graduation with a timeline of bush's office. I should find out how long it took samuel to make the 4 pages but really good. Good tabing to create the familiar syntax of folders/files.

Really good.

Mapping Genes

Mapping the Human 'Diseasome' by Marc Vidal; Albert-Laszlo Barabasi; Michael Cusick

really like this, clean simplification of a complex subject showing the amount of genes associated with that disease. Researchers created a map linking different diseases, represented by circles, to the genes they have in common, represented by squares. love the size ratio and soft pastels colours.

Text 2 Mind Map

This is an excellant, easy to use online mind mapping tool.

Visualise your ideas, thoughts in the text editor on the left, to create a new node/level simply use TAB key and to go back a level, new main node BACKSPACE key, like you do in WORD. Honestly, you need to nothing of design, mind mapping, visualising and it creates the top map that you can view full screen with the controls on the right.

As for the quality of the visualisation, the more TAB levels you create the colours automatically create give you an excellant single tone harmony (faber birren) and it changes in its size both working together to create a very effective hierachy of information. You can change the colours.

The functionality is excellant, simple, clear and to make it transferrable from their site you can easily click Save Map and it generates a flattened jpeg that opens in a new window, so allow popups.

To make changes just tweak your text editor on left and click convert to mind map.

I shouldn't go over the top, but to find such a easy, effective, simple to use online tool is great for those who prefer the speed of digital manipulation, than that of on paper and then having to scan/photog to share digitally, very good.

I just shared some ideas of my research from particular books to test its visualisation effects.

Memory Visual

memory+visual+v8+iso+copyright Memory Visual

I wanted to understand the difference between Kbps and Kb, memory and internet speeds.

Internet - data transfer speeds is - kbps = kilo bits per sec
Memory - file sizes/capacity is - KBps = Kilo Bytes per sec

8 bits = 1 byte

So on a 56 k... bits per sec modem (dial up) you can download 7 Kilo Bytes Per Sec. of a particular file.

Therefore if you follow the bottom with the icons you can see the file sizes/capacities of different hardware/software... could in future differentiate/seperate the 2 but most people are aware of what is hardware and which is software. Allows for contextualising the file sizes/capacities together, tufte would say seperate.

Suppose people have to remember that it increments in hundreds for KB, then increments in hundreds for MB, GB.... So there isnt the same amount measured. there is a new ratio.

tried to make this explicit with the MB ratio to B, i.e. 1 MB = 1,000,000 Bytes

I provide a table to give estimates of total secs for particular file sizes, linking the differentiated ratios to the KB, MB ratio's.

Well, creating this helped me realise the actual download file size/capacity of my broadband which isnt 2MBps (basic sky), it is 244KBps, slightly smaller.

I love how the isometric gives the non-physical data an abstract space, and make you associate file sizes, speeds with volume, area, capacity like its filling land creating measure of distance associated with time. Its no longer just stats & figures.

Memory sticks, ipods are now topographic landmarks that can be contrasted in their volume/file size capacity to each other.

There may be a better rendering, representation of the data, maybe an isometric '3d' treemap, or an isometric pyramid, but I think it is a pretty good attempt to simplify complex data with quite a few variables,

internet data speed - dial up 56kbps, broadband, wireless broadband
internet download times - i.e. not just per seconds... i give average totals
file sizes/capacity - B, KB, MB, GB
contemporary products/prices - their capacity in relation

well much help was from here with calculating data speeds/file size per sec
