Paper Works

Paper Works, 'a touring exhibition from Flow Gallery in London, features a host of internationally acclaimed artists whose work all harnesses the sensitivity of the hand-made object. Fragility and transience are the immediate connotations which resonate in the use of paper as a medium for creating three-dimensional form. Single sheets are either reworked or pulped by the artists to form visually striking pieces.'

This is a close up of this great paper piece called 'A Story' by Aino Kajaniemi and she describes them as 'memory scrolls, and the viewer has to imagine and create the messages contained in the scrolls for themselves. Love letters, an apology'

A very cool gallery and good to see that space at the civic been put to good use. Visit and keep the gallery going which has had a beautiful redevelopment from I the gallery manager said lottery fund. You can purchase pieces aand adorn your home with unique paper art.

Map the Psychogeography

Walk: Poem Pictures 2010 is a beautifully bound and lovely exploration/combination of words and drawings from Ian Mcmillan & Iain Nicholls.

I love these, a visual map, dialogue of their local area. very abstract, quirky collection of drawings and words combined. There are a few and suggest you try contact the creators to see if they have made any more books. Really plays with the space like Mallarme and abstract.

Concrete Poetry. They also eloquently describe their process.

The garden didnt really help the thinking, though it was more the walking helped and still helps my creative process. Thinking somehow doesnt feel like the right word, its a kind of drifting or dreaming. Somehow the mind is going for a walk as well as the legs'

My Fry

I love this app from Stefanie Posavec and Dare Digital. She is to be featured in V isualisation Magazine Vol 4 Handmade with her equally beautiful Literary Organisms work.

These projects are great as they examine the accessibility of information and try to make complex narratives of words easier to read by opening up the multi-linear reading of data, see blu-comic or typographic nuance. Giving it a new pattern which is just as brilliant achieved in this app, what apps i think should be made for: easier to access information, but also she & dare digital bring with it beauty in form too.

'MyFry is the iPhone app edition of The Fry Chronicles, Stephen Fry's latest autobiography.

This project was initiated by Jeremy Ettinghausen at Penguin. I designed the 'visual index' graphics, and Dare Digital made it interactive and created everything else (ie the most important parts).

This iPhone app functions as a 'visual index' of key theme tags within the book, all of which have been divided into 4 major groups: People, Subjects, Emotions, and 'Fryisms'.

The entirety of the book is represented by a circular wheel of 'spines', each of which represents a section of text. The arcs around the outside of the wheel connect sections that are tagged with the same theme.

Through interacting with the scroll wheel, the user can explore the text and read sections in chronological order, by theme, or in any order he or she chooses. Really would love websites to take on this persona, of multi linear reading, interactive, where information is represented as a node, see concept map.

McCann Erickson Manchester has created a poster campaign for a mental health organisation that combines photography and Processing (B.Fry & C.Reas) to great effect.

The two six sheet posters are for Leeds Counselling and will appear in doctors' surgeries, clinics, student halls and other suitable locations throughout Leeds.

Animated Face

People have fallen in love with word clouds that make pictures. Zoom in and you see a bunch of individual words. Zoom out and you see a famousperson's face, seen so many Obama '08 - vote for hope faces.

It is a dictionary or a portrait? Mystical. TBWA/Chiat/Day,an advertising agency in Nashville, Tennessee of all places, brings the concept to promotion for the 2009 Grammy Awards - in animated form. Float through thecloud of songs and lo and behold, it's Stevie Wonder.

Book Cutouts

This Is Where We Live from 4th Estate on Vimeo.

These are very nice books visalised into a typographic territory through cutouts by Peter Cookridge & James Birdle (directed by asylum's ben falk & jos newbolt.

It is a stop motion film and features an entire city made out of books and covers from publishing house, 4th estate's titles.

they visualise scenes that cookreidge describes as 'in jokes' such as a man falling off a boat which is the scene from title book 'The Corrections'.

The production design is by Pippa Culpepper who crafts these beautiful artefacts.

Literature Visualisations

These are some great literature / text visualisations that I have found. From madonna, tom sharpe, da vinci (dan brown), royal society archive, universal declaration of human rights & a german poem.

Literature map lets you input your fave author and watch it display (limited aesthetically) other authors you are probably aware of but probably some your not. Great tool.

The poetry by boris is still equally intersesting and aesthetically plaeasing as his 05 version, visual e quite rightly point out it is a little more accessible (function) than before.

Chris weaver's projects are triumph's for accessibility with his elements visualisation I am certain would benefit anyone to learn, use, develop from, great tool.

Chris harrison's visualising the royal society might not be too accessible but i think function's to some extent. again like many troublesome issues with visualising, the works tend to need a degree of zoomability, 'scaling well as the data size gets very large' (visualizaton goals & features).
