Language and Visual Communication

fc37e6dd6823d39d2d0c4612453ce8b8 Language and Visual Communication

I think this was a good discussion talking about language and communicating without phonetics touching on quite a few forms of language and creativity. This was my thoughts below to this question.

Is it possible real ideographic way of communicate ideas? that is think, communicate and learn without phonetic chains? New era challenge require a more rapid and easy way of thinking.

My thoughts, love the discussion: http://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&gid=1782421&type=member&item=10926482

Susan Kare designed the trash can, apologies not checking who, someone mentioned basing language on gesture and I like the term grant put iconic physiology I think it was, still needs to be learned like phonetics. but she made the smiling face on load up of the Mac in 84'

When I was reading, I came across that language needed to search for the strongest metaphor (object) to relate meaning like an ideogram (pg 28-29 in my writings link below). But someone said they try to unlearn what they know and think of objects without words, I try it too. led me into representing objects through shapes, silhouettes. I also liked the story that a guy shuts his eyes, similar to Claude Heath and tries to draw the world, like Betty Edwards I think it was, drawing on the left side. altering our perception, being creative, looking at line drawings upside down for the first time you see it challenges you to work out what it is, you just copy it. not sure how the advance to not using phonetics. unlearning advances the creativity and ultimately the imagining of new ways I guess.

Logos do it, icons for blogger, wordpress (ok still letters), delicious, squidoo, digg (the people) these are universal, they're most widely seen (internet).

Brands do it, coca cola (letters I know).

I'm sure its got to involve more senses other than sight to be more widely applicable without phonetics. brail and tactility, still represent a letter in the alphabet though I think. But I like that the grid comes into it, all characters equal in size, maybe not area but equal height and relative width.

Similar to time dimension brought into sound with Morse code again representing letters. they look good graphically, cant remember the artist-designer

Still, a group of people would need to agree to discerned representations, otherwise how can they communicate complex thought like we're doing here? http://www.visualisationmagazine.com/dissertation.htm pg 28-29 about. Please share you thoughts, links.

Wibiya

42ee922ee2711daec2e862bd19a92367 Wibiya

Wibiya is great. Using ajax and jquery so quite browser friendly and can be easily implemented into a site with either a plugin for wordpress, html code for a website and compatible to joomla, tumblr, blogger, ning (no longer free, i'm not a happy bunny) and more...   www.wibiya.com Great social networking tool and it just adds a toolbar that permanently hovers at the bottom of your web browser as you scroll it moves with you. Then their are apps that you install into that toolbar, facebook, add this, twitter, facebook fan page (i recently discovered and set up http://www.facebook.com/pages/Visualisation/113395388714343), but the one i love is a Timeline of your blog posts provide by http://www.allofme.com   Very nice visual timeline. Use it, very good, easy to implement. Apolgoises for the dwindled posts recently, waiting for a broadband connection to come about again, but i regular share links and inspiration here: http://visualthinkmap.tumblr.com

My WordPress Web 2.0

8a5bd82c71fcb5d74ac29a2d4ddd9bc2 My Wordpress Web 2.0

When I was browsing through the search pages trying to find plugins that did the functionality i was after and checking the review/rating to see if it works or is the best or at least good..... what a farce!

You find good plugins from searching the million different posts that collate the 'top 30 wordpress plugins', 'top 100 wordpress...". Hours! The way I found the best plugins was to see them in use at other peoples wordpress blogs, where I found linkwithin, very good, lijit search, or when I received an email from a friend using mailchimp. I remember I tried to find a google suggest (predict your search) like plugin, I tried loads of plugins, myabe it was my limited knowledge of being able to tweak php, but non worked, eventually I did find one, ajax... even css customizable, works on a smart phone too! MAKE YOUR OWN!
Design I wanted to group them into categories, find a pattern that I could use. But some plugins crossed between categories, overlaps. The all work in conjunction with each other. I uploaded them to windows live shared space and made some bit.ly/WP15 associated to each plugin so you can download them and it saves on space for the design. They all stem from the center, around my blog. Dislikes I am not entirely satisfied with the bottom list with the referring creator of the plugin and the download address. Usability Just download the full image, there is enough quality to see the download link from bit.ly and plugin description. PLUGINS HYPERLINKS

    Self Portraits

    0265f1cc1b237ddf947124c45794bdcc Self Portraits

I love this representation of self  'Map of an Englishman' by Grayson Perry. Very intricate and in depth, I think I posted something called BrainLand in a previous post ages ago but this is detailed.

'His Map of An Englishman (2004) is a mock-Tudor etch of an imaginary island, not coincidentally resembling a brain, surrounded by Psychopath, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Delirium and other unpleasantness at sea; divided into counties with alluring names such as Tender, Bitch, Romance, Cliché and Guru – Normal and Easy are pretty small areas, and Fear is a large, scary forest in the east.' http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/ They also remind me of these that I saw. How curious again, seen at strange maps, he released a book. Well worth a look.

    Mass in C major

These are so beautiful, saw them in Aperture from fellow tutor. Think they are from 2007 so apologies if it is repeating an over posted project but they are brilliant from the open ended group.

'We compare the “Gloria” section of Bach’s Mass in C to that of another contrapuntal mass — in this case, Beethoven’s Mass in C major of 1807.

The paired scores are rotated counter-clockwise, allowing time to run upwards. The words of the Mass are arranged on their inner margins. We track and inscribe the order in which the singers advance through the words, illuminating the ebb and flow of vocal time in counterpoint.' http://openendedgroup.com/index.php/artworks/breath/breath-web/

Might not be able to discern exact data from them and are more aesthetically inspiring in form than function, but does make music look as good as it sounds.

'I believe in God — Bach’s God. (Glenn Gould)

The Latin text of the Roman Mass has been set to music repeatedly throughout the history of Western music. Since that text has been relatively stable since the 11th century, it forms a useful constant when set within different musical scores, allowing us to make unusual but telling comparisons among them.

Having chosen Bach’s Mass in B minor of 1749 as the canonical work, we compared it to two other contrapuntal compositions. In this lightbox we compare the “Gloria” sections of Bach’s composition and Ockeghem’s Missa Mi-mi of the 15th century. In the next lightbox, we compare Bach with Beethoven.

The paired scores are rotated counter-clockwise, allowing time to run upwards. The words of the Mass are arranged on their inner margins. We track and inscribe the order in which the singers advance through the words, illuminating the ebb and flow of vocal time in counterpoint. In this fashion, the unique differences of the musical structures disclose themselves to the eye: the concise clarity of Ockeghem, the intricate enumeration of Bach, and the complex convolution of Beethoven.' http://openendedgroup.com/index.php/artworks/breath/breath-web/

Wanted to do some poster design for the next issue of my mag. http://visualisationmagazine.com/volume3_isometrics.htm I did the second one, but i loved the type overlapping of type too much, so made one individually. Will do this for everyone featured and send them one. Really like the font: Consolas
